Make Yourself At Home
Chris taught Sophomore English for ten years to mostly reluctant learners. After five years of failing to get his students to fall back in love with learning, Chris decided it was time for something different. Chris stopped whole class instruction and moved to a blended classroom model. To further engage and motivate his kids, Chris Gamified his class and introduced yearlong Alternate Reality games. Finally, Chris introduced Passion-Based Learning through The Be About It Project, a focus on communities of practice, and Bengal Buzz – a student-run news show that gave students a voice in the story of their school.
It was around this time that Chris decided to document the wins and loses of his evolving pedagogy and programs on a blog. In 2013, Teched Up Teacher was born.
In December 2015, Chris left the classroom to be an EDTech Coach. As the EDTech Coach at Fair Haven, Chris spends half his day amplifying the great things teachers are doing and working beside them to better use EDTech in the classroom.
The other half of his day is spent in the Innovation Lab. Chris’ take on the K-8 makerspace. The Innovation Lab focuses on Design Thinking, Engineering, Computer Science, Digital Arts like podcasting and video editing, and entrepreneurship. Chris hopes to make the Innovation Lab the first self-funded makerspace in the country.
Chris is passionate about the crossroads where education and technology meet because he has seen the amazing things that can happen when you tech-up teaching. When combined with great teaching, EDTech allows us to deliver a personalized, student-centered learning experience for all of our kids that (re)ignites their love for learning.
Chris would love to come to your school and put on a workshop or speak at your event. Check out his resume below and send him an e-mail!
