Chris Aviles is the 21st Century Skills, Technology, and Innovation Coordinator for the Fair Haven school district in Fair Haven, New Jersey where he teaches the Fair Haven Innovates program he created in 2015.

The Fair Haven Innovates program is Fair Haven school district’s 21st century life, innovation, and technology program for 4th to 8th graders. Chris uses social entrepreneurship to help students learn the skills they’ll need to be successful when they grow up. Students sell products and solve problems as they run real businesses that turn a real profit. Students use a percentage of these profits to give back to their community through their student-run charity FH Gives.

Chris is also a recovering high school English teacher. Before coming to Fair Haven, Chris taught Sophomore English for ten years. Six years into his career, Chris decided he was done with the traditional model of school and it was time to shake things up. Chris stopped whole class instruction and started blending. To further engage and motivate his kids, Chris turned his classroom into a videogame with Gamification, Game-Based Learning, and introduced yearlong Alternate Reality games. Finally, Chris introduced Passion-Based Learning through his  Be About It Project, a focus on communities of practice, and Bengal Buzz – a student-run news show that gave students a voice in the story of their school.

It was at this same time that Chris decided to document his evolving pedagogy on a blog. In 2013, Teched Up Teacher was born.

Chris is passionate about the crossroads where education and technology meet because he has seen the amazing things that can happen when you tech-up teaching. When combined with great teaching, EDTech allows us to deliver a personalized, student-centered learning experience for all of our kids that (re)ignites their love for learning. Chris is considered an expert in Gamification, Game-Based Learning, Passion Projects, Project-Based Learning, School Gardens, Blended Learning, and Makerspaces. He is a Google Certified Innovator, Trainer, and GEG Leader. Chris is also a Raspberry Pi Certified Educator and Microsoft Innovative Educator. He holds a Masters in Educational Technology from Boise State and is the Chief Innovation Officer at Silas Solutions.

Chris would love to come to your school and put on a workshop or speak at your event.

Feel free to contact Chris if you have any questions, need some advice, or just want to say Hi!
